If Marty does return, he will have to understand that he is going to be a backup. He will probably only play about 15-20 games. I would love to see Marty come back if he is healthy and can accept the fact the his time as a starter has come to an end. Marty can be a great teacher for Schneider this year and next year if he returns.

I don't want this. Schneider should be the starter already and play 50 games. Marty comes back next season he should be the backup but he won't be...His cap hit will be higher than it should be out of respect for what he has accomplished. I would rather just have him retire going out playing good.

I don't think he is going to return. With the way Lou Lamoriello run's things (I think) both he and Marty already know the future plan for the New Jersey Devils.

There are rumor speculated that Marty will fill an upper management opening with Lou Lamoriello once this season ends.

It's time to sit back and enjoy the last season as it unfolds for the greatest goaltender of all time.

As long as he plays well this season and doesn't play more than 20-25 games next season.

That's my take, too. The problem is if he plays well this season he'll want more than 20-25 starts next year.

I think we can wait until after the season to wonder about this.

This could be a problem with Schneider in town.

Best scenario would be for Devils to trade Marty at trade deadline to any playoff team in need of an upgrade at goalie. Gets the Devils a quality draft pick next year, gives Marty one last chance for a cup run, and doesn't create a goaltender controversy here in NJ.

If Marty comes back next year A) he has to understand he's the back-up and B) it has to be for less money.

Remember that after this season Larsson, Loktionov, Carter, Gionta, Bernier, Tedenby, Josefson, and Olesz to name a few all need new contracts. They're all getting paid a million or less right now and I'd like to think at least a few of those guys will play well enough this year to earn a significant raise.

Good news is Marty, Jagr, and Zid all come off the books next year. That's about $13mil in space right there, plus a higher cap, we'd have more than enough room to resign whomever we want. Point is, we can't risk losing guys who will be the future of this team to resign older guys who simply won't be.

Lets not forget Schneider is a UFA in 2 years. He deserves to be a starter.

Yeah I would love if he signed at 1.5-2 mil but Lou will likely sign him at 2.5 or something. Not a chance it's 4 mil again.

Carolina needs D, let's give them Volchenkov as a "welcome to our division" present.

You should tell him to let us move on in peace. If Marty wants to come back again, theres no way the organization can turn him down just out of respect/loyalty. The ball is entirely in his court.
